(How do you begin the new school year? Do you have ideas of what to do first?) Teaching is a very difficult job, especially during our current world events. Teachers have had to make adjustments in the ways they deliver instruction. In the classroom or virtually using technology. Currently, schools are closed for the summer. Now is the time for teachers to rest, relax, and rejuvenate. It is also a time to reflect on the previous year and begin to prepare and outline of expectations, procedures, routines, and develop communications with family members. We all know you and your peers...
Teaching is my passion, I have always loved caring for and helping children learn. Learning was not always easy for me so I wanted to know the why and how can I reach the students who were like me, had a difficult time with learning. I believe that learning is a process that is active and engaging which requires the manipulation of objects, experiences, and conversations in order to build upon mental images of the world. Along with making connections between new ideas and prior understanding, where one's knowledge base is challenged and supports the construction of all future learning. For me learning requires self-motivation and cognitive engagement to be sustained when learning complex concepts.
As a teacher I believe it is our responsibility to make learning self-motivating and interesting, to tap into one's innate curiosity and thirst for knowledge. I also believe we must incorporate the most unique teaching techniques and strategies during daily instruction.
After teaching for ten years, I went back to school and obtained my master’s degree in education. Upon completion I decided to move from Connecticut to the Southern Maryland area. What a culture shock. By this I mean I came from a very small affluent school district to and extremely large minimumily funded school system. Teachers were not given any monetary funding for supplementary supplies anything extra such as items for their classroom décor, arts and crafts, even paper was often rationed out at certain times of the school year.
It was extremely difficult to purchase supplies to support daily instruction or activities. For these events I had to purchase these items with my own funds or we had to rely on donations. At times it took fund-raisers or support from the PTA/PTO- to aide teachers in obtaining the required items needed.
